(Bernama) - Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) today strongly denied rumours that the party is sponsoring the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) to split the opposition vote in the April 16 state election.
PBB assistant treasurer, Mohd Naroden Majais said the party’s ‘existing’ members and leaders never planted independents or third parties for a proxy fight in any election.
“It is not PBB’s culture to sponsor a third party to split votes.
“I don’t think the existing PBB (members or leaders) will do that (sponsor a third party to split votes).
“However, if it is former PBB members or leaders, then I have no idea,” he told reporters after the 39th annual general meeting of the Sarawak Government Pensioners Association, here today.
Some political pundits disclosed that SNAP, a predominantly Dayak party and founded in 1961, was sponsored by a third party to split the opposition vote in the coming state election.
Talks started going around alleging that SNAP was being sponsored when SNAP went ahead yesterday and announced another 11 candidates to contest in the state election in addition to the 16 named last Tuesday.
The opposition coalition in Sarawak comprises four parties — SNAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), DAP and PAS.
The Election Commission (EC) today announced that nomination day for the 10th Sarawak Election is April 6 while polling has been set for April 16.
