Media Prima’s chief executive moved today to deflect growing criticisms over 8TV’s Ramadhan advertisements, asking people to “chill” and not to “overanalyse” the public service announcements which gives advice on how non-Muslims should behave during the fasting month.
The advertisements have sparked public outrage online, with many viewers complaining that the advertisements were racist and appeared to stereotype the behaviour of the Chinese during the fasting month.
“Chill guys. Don’t overthink the ads. Its written, produced and directed by a multi-racial team. If you overanalyse, anything will be bad,” said Media Prima chief operating officer Ahmad Izham Omar on Twitter today.
Ahmad Izham also used to run 8TV before moving up to head the group proper.
Released as public service announcements, the advertisements depict a socially-inept “Chinese” girl eating in public during the fasting month. The advertisements then suggests that non-Muslims should refrain from doing so.
The same “Chinese” girl is seen in another advertisement wearing a tank-top when visiting a Ramadhan bazaar, which appeared to offend the Muslims around her.
The girl, dressed in the sleeveless singlet, openly showed her armpits to passers-by while she fiddled with a bunch of bananas. The armpits, however, were digitally obscured.
“Wow, I feel like I’m the centre of attention! I love it! And I love you all!” says the girl in the video.
The advertisement then suggests that she was wearing tight-fitting or revealing clothes during Ramadhan, with a message “Do not wear tight and revealing clothes.”
In the next scene, the same girl is seen wearing a baju kurung and is greeted with smiles by the people in the bazaar.
Earlier today, local celebrity and singer-songwriter Pete Teo commented on Twitter: “Wanna see a horrible Ramadhan TVC? Yasmin Ahmad where r u? What happened @AhmadIzhamOmar?
